Building the Future of Dental IT – Our Capstone Journey

06 Jul , 2020 Sunday

There’s something uniquely satisfying about solving real-world problems with technology—and that’s exactly what my amazing teammates Grace, Jannatul, and I set out to do for our capstone project.

Together, we designed and built a complete IT infrastructure for a growing dental clinic with branches in Ottawa, Toronto, and Montreal. The challenge? Connecting all locations with seamless, secure, and smart technology—and we were all in.

🛠️ What We Built

We started by designing a robust network architecture using BGP and OSPF for routing between cities, with VLANs configured to segment internal departments like reception, dental staff, and administration. We applied Access Control Lists (ACLs) to secure the flow of traffic between them—no one was snooping on anyone’s X-rays on our watch!

Then came VoIP. Using Asterisk (an open-source platform) on Ubuntu Server, we implemented an internal phone system with voicemail, call routing, and even inter-branch transfers—because a call from Montreal to Toronto shouldn’t feel like a call to Mars.

🌐 Smiles Online – The Web App

We also built a custom web-based booking application, powered by AI chatbots for 24/7 patient support and appointment booking. The smart AI concierge system we're working on takes it a step further—automating appointment reminders and handling incoming patient queries like a digital receptionist.

🖥️ Enterprise Management & Security

On the backend, we deployed Windows Server 2022 with Identity and Access Management (IAM) to control user roles, access permissions, and policies across all branches.

For security, we installed Snort as our Intrusion Detection and Prevention System (IDS/IPS)—a reliable open-source guardian keeping an eye on suspicious activity.

🤝 The Best Part – The Team

The highlight of this entire project wasn’t just the tech—it was the teamwork. Working with Grace and Jannatul made every late-night brainstorming session and every bug-fix worth it. We learned, we laughed, we delivered.

Stay tuned—we’ll be sharing pictures and behind-the-scenes snapshots of our setup soon!

This project showed us how tech can empower everyday businesses—one branch, one server, and one smile at a time.
